As I stood in front of the mirror with my black mascara in hand, putting on the final touches, I sighed softly. This week had gone by so quickly and I was exhausted between work and going out each night. A few of my girlfriends and I had been visiting the local bar a few blocks from my home and while there were a ton of guys each night, none of them struck my interest. They all seemed pretty much the same – desperate and angry. My self-esteem fell drastically after I found out my fiancée of two years had been sleeping around with a woman at his work place. Still, I found it difficult to stoop to such a low level. I wanted to experience something wild and new and none of the men I had encountered this week seemed to be that type. I didn’t really feel like going tonight, but my girlfriends insisted I give it one more shot.
While lost in my thoughts as I finished getting ready, I heard a knock at the door. I was almost certain it was my lovely lady friends here ten minutes early as always. I sighed once more and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked refreshed and younger than usual, even though I was aiming for something a bit different. My tanned complexion was complimented nicely by the baby blue strapless top I was wearing. I had picked out a cute white skirt to go along with it and they looked nice together. I was hoping for a sexy look, but youthful was okay since I wasn’t up for much tonight. I walked downstairs and opened the door; sure enough Roxy, Claire and Maria were all waiting for me. They all looked stunning and I forced a smile as they ‘oohed’ and ‘awed’ over me.
“Are you ready to go Kate?” Maria winked as she teased me. I nodded and grabbed my purse before locking up and closing the door behind me. The girls were awfully cheerful and chatty tonight, but I was too uninterested to follow their conversation. I had too much on my mind to care and I had finally realized why I was in such a distracted mood; three years ago today, Jerry had asked me out on our first date. I frowned to myself and began to slow down my pace as we walked toward the bar.
Tonight the girls had thought it would be a good idea to walk since it was a nice warm summer night. I only lived about two blocks away so it didn’t bother me to do so; the fresh air was good for me. I hadn’t taken a walk in a while so the change of scene was a bit refreshing, but it still didn’t make up for my ill mood. I tried my best to not to let it show, but Maria turned and looked at me as I began to fall behind.
“Are you alright? You seemed distracted tonight.” She asked me in a concerned tone. Her face was kind and I knew Maria out of all my friends was the one who actually cared if there was something wrong. However, I just forced a smile and nodded. I didn’t want to ruin the night with my problems.
“I’m fine, just one of those days, but who knows maybe something good will happen tonight.” I smiled weakly at her and she placed her hand on my back and rubbed it a bit. She knew better than to try and push me into telling her anything. She stayed by my side as we made our way down the block. We walked in silence for a moment until I realized we were just outside the bar. There were a lot of sporty looking cars parked up and down the block and I looked around curiously. As if she could read my mind, Maria spoke up as we waited to get in.
“I hope things turn around for you tonight, you need a good pick-me-up. Plus the crowd on Thursday is a lot different than the rest of the week.” Maria giggled and led me into the bar. Roxy and Claire were already inside dancing with some attractive looking guys. They were the life of the party and they never hesitated when it came to being flirty and seductive. I looked at them and waved with a smile before going to the bar.
The bartender was an older man and he had seen me in here twice this week already. He smiled as he walked over to me. I looked to Maria who had slipped onto the barstool beside me and she blushed slightly as he approached us. I smiled seeing her reaction then turned my gaze to his. He seemed to notice her blush as well since his focus was no longer on me.
“Hello ladies, would you like the usual tonight?” He chuckled and glanced at me once more before focusing all his attention on Maria. I didn’t find this man attractive, but in my mood, I was a bit offended and hurt that I was not getting the same kind of attention. I nodded and smiled ordering for the both of us.
“We’ll each have an Appletini, please.” My voice was quiet and I tried not to seem bothered by his lack of interest. He nodded and winked at Maria before making our drinks. I turned to look around the bar and Maria was right, the crowd was different. It seemed that everyone was here for fun rather than pity like most nights. One guy who was standing in a corner caught my attention. He was tall and very muscular with short blonde hair and deep blue eyes. He was wearing a black tank top and blue jeans with some black tennis shoes. In his hand, he was holding a dark brown beer bottle. His eyes were scanning the room as if he was searching for his prey.
I was brought back to reality as I heard the base of the glasses cling against the bar. I turned and smiled at the bartender. I paid him for the drinks before sipping at mine. Maria was busy flirting with the bartender so I turned to look for my mystery man once again. He was still scoping out the room and I decided to go say hello. I gulped down the last bit of alcohol and set the glass on the bar before walking over to him. I felt nervous but did my best not to show it.
“I’m Kate.” I leaned against the wall and looked at him. He simply nodded and continued his search. I was unsure of what to say or do at this moment. My heart was pounding as I began to feel slightly embarrassed. He took another sip of his beer and looked over at me for a moment.
“Shawn.” He replied with little interest. I smiled feeling a bit relieved that he hadn’t completely ignored me. I still felt unsure of what to think or what to do. It had been such a long time since I’d been single and flirting had never been my forte. Feeling as though I’d reached a dead end, I moved away from where he was standing. My mind was searching for a solution, even though I considered it a lost cause. My bright green eyes searched the dance floor for Roxy and Claire. It was kind of hard to see with all the people dancing, but I spotted Claire dancing alone. Without hesitation, I walked onto the dance floor and started dancing with her.
“Kate! I’m glad you came out here with me!” Claire yelled over the music. She started dancing with me as the music blared throughout the bar. I moved close to her as we danced and I explained the situation with this Shawn guy. She looked over at him and nodded knowingly. Claire giggled and whispered in my ear as she pressed her body against mine. I felt a little uncomfortable with her closeness, but she always knew how to get a guy to notice her so I went with it.
“I know exactly how to get his attention. Just follow my lead.” She smiled and bit at her bottom lip. I felt my cheeks heat up at her gesture but nodded in agreement regardless. Claire grabbed my hand and turned around pulling me to a spot where Shawn could easily notice us. The song that was booming was rather tasteless, but had a nice beat. I wasn’t much for dancing so I felt a bit awkward as I tried to follow Claire’s lead. She was amazing at letting loose and letting the music take over her body. She must have noticed my nervousness as she playfully placed her hands on my hips, forcing me to loosen up more. I giggled and looked over in Shawn’s direction. He quickly darted his eyes to another girl as I glanced over at him. I felt my cheeks heat up as I turned back to Claire with a cheeky smile. She grinned in response and we continued to move our bodies together.
I began to feel the music take over as I let myself loosen up completely. Claire spun me around so I faced Shawn, I noticed him looking at me once more and I pretended not to notice as Claire and I started to dance seductively. As the song ended I turned to face Claire once again, I felt so refreshed and full of life at that moment that I really didn’t care if Shawn noticed me now. However, the expression on Claire’s face indicated something was going on. She had an ecstatic look in her eyes as she covered her mouth to keep from screaming in delight. I looked at her curiously but was soon taken by surprise as a warm hand cupped my shoulder. My eyes widened and Claire nodded eagerly before I turned to face him.
He didn’t say a word as he slid his hand down my arm and gripped my slender hand. Shawn turned and led me away from Claire. I could hear her whistling and making other cat calls as we left the dance floor. My face felt like it was on fire as I followed Shawn out of the bar. He didn’t hesitate or make small talk when we got outside. I was taken by surprise once again as he pushed me up against the wall outside the bar. He moved his hands up my arms as he kissed me roughly, I could feel the bricks rake against my skin as he forced me against the wall. The sensation was amazing. I closed my eyes kissing him back just as roughly as I placed my hands on his hips. I gripped his jeans tightly as he moved his hands up my body and through my hair. Shawn pulled my head closer to his as he parted my lips with his tongue. My tongue met his and he massaged mine a bit roughly with his own. Our tongues wrestled one another while my heart pounded in my chest. As I felt myself become aroused, I instinctively pulled his hips to mine. As I did so, he pulled away, breaking the kiss. I panted and looked up at him with curiosity and longing.
